As part of its ongoing effort to identify and promote the growth of key and emerging industry clusters, OCBC is seeking out companies who are interested in participating as an industry stakeholder as part of the Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Grant Project. With this unique grant, OCBC is seeking regional partners who have an interest in advancing the competitive position of companies within the alternative fuel and vehicle regional clusters. Areas addressed in the grant project include analysis of regional demand for alternative fuel and vehicle technology, as well as the identification of strategies deployed in other regions to grow this cluster of opportunity. |GOVERNOR BROWN PROPOSES 2014-2015 BUDGET|
Gov. Jerry Brown proposed a balanced budget January 9 that pays off more than $11 billion in debt, invests $6 billion that had been deferred to public schools, and expands health care coverage for millions. The budget also addresses Proposition 98 on the November 2014 ballot to strengthen the rainy day fund by $1.6 billion to protect against future downturns. |TOURISTS FLOCK TO ORANGE COUNTY|
Tourism is a major factor in Orange County's recovery out of the recession, and hospitality industry leaders expect this to continue in 2014. Preliminary numbers show 44.3 million visitors coming to the county in 2013, which is 500,000 more than in 2012, said Jay Burress, Chief Executive of the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau. Orange County is benefiting from the improving economy, growing consumer confidence and hotel developers. As part of Gov. Jerry Brown's Economic Development Initiative, California businesses located in census tracts with the highest share of both unemployment and poverty in the state are now eligible for a New Employment Credit (NEC). The NEC also applies to businesses located within former Enterprise Zone boundaries, excluding wealthy areas. |FEINSTEIN URGES LA TO HELP REVIVE ONTARIO AIRPORT, INLAND EMPIRE ECONOMY |
Senator Dianne Feinstein is urging cooperation between Los Angeles and Inland Empire leaders to restore the economic health of Ontario International Airport (ONT). In a letter to Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Feinstein indicated that between 2007 and 2012, ONT lost 49 percent of its flights, causing gates to shut down, concessions to leave and significant job losses. Feinstein was prompted to write the letter by business and community leaders voicing concerns about the economic impact of the declining airport. Feinstein suggested local business leaders, transit agencies, and local governments work with the airport to put plans together to improve transportation access, reach out to new carriers, waive fees and offer other incentives to attract international service, and market the strengths of their facilities. |REPORT SHOWS HOMELESSNESS DECREASED IN OC SINCE 2009|
The County of Orange released the Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness Status Update in December 2013.The plan provides oversight and accountability for the implementation of the goals and strategies necessary for the Commission to End Homelessness. The report indicates that the number of homeless decreased from 6,929 in 2011 to 4,251 in 2013. OCBC applauds Karen Roper, Director of Orange County Community Services, and the commission on the effective strategies to address the critical issue of homelessness in Orange County. |ORANGE IS THE "NEW" GREEN: INSIDE THE OUTDOORS WITH OC DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION|
Inside the Outdoors is a unique, hands-on environmental education program administered by the Orange County Department of Education. Their mission is to empower students, teachers, parents, and the community to explore natural areas and expand their knowledge of the environment. Each year, Inside the Outdoors provides full and partial scholarships to approximately 55,000 low-income students. The program offers traveling scientists who visit schools and use story-telling, live animals and science labs to support traditional classroom learning. The program includes exploratory field trips that take students out of the classroom and into the natural world at more than a dozen field sites ranging from wetlands to wilderness. The Outdoor Science School offers four- and five-day science and nature immersion programs.
