HISTORY IN THE MAKING! IRVINE APPROVES DEVELOPMENT PLANS FOR OC GREAT PARK

After more than 40 hours of public hearings and more than 10 years in the making, the City of Irvine voted to approve FivePoint Communities' compelling development plan for homes, schools, infrastructure, and public amenities at 1:46 a.m. on Wednesday, November 27. The plan includes a sports field and entertainment venues, a wooded area and wildlife corridor--all contributing to robust economic development and jobs creation for Irvine and Orange County. HIGH SPEED RAIL AUTHORITY: 'THE JUDGE DID NOT INVALIDATE BONDS AS APPROVED BY VOTERS'

The following statement is from Dan Richard, chairman, California High Speed Rail Authority:

"We are reviewing both decisions to chart our next steps, but it is important to stress that the court again declined the opposition's request to stop the high-speed rail project from moving forward.  Additionally, the judge did not invalidate the bonds as approved by the voters in Proposition 1A.  Like all transformative projects, we understand that there will be many challenges that will be addressed as we go forward in building the nation's first high-speed rail system.CLICK HERE to read more. For more information, contact Bryan Starr, Senior Vice President, Government Affairs.

JWA AIR SERVICE OC TO MEXICO GENERATES $131 MILLION TO OC'S ECONOMY

John Wayne Airport plays a critical role in fueling Orange County's economic engine, even more so following last year's addition of international flights to Mexico. A recent study indicates that JWA air service from Mexico to Orange County generated a total economic output of $131 million since it began in June 2012. The new service created 990 full-time jobs, equaling $39 million in earnings--including wages, salaries and benefits; and visitor expenditures equated to nearly $50 million annually. CLICK HERE to read the study. For more information, contact Matt Petteruto, Vice President, Economic Development.

PROPOSED BILL AIMS TO EXPAND FEDERALLY FUNDED EMPOWERMENT ZONES

On November 18, OCBC's Economic Development Committee hosted a roundtable discussion with Kish Rajan, Director,  Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz). Rajan briefed business leaders on the Governor's Economic Development Initiative, which is scheduled to go into effect January 1, 2014, replacing the phased-out state Enterprise Zone program. CLICK HERE to read an interview with Rajan regarding the new state tax credit programs. In response to the phasing out of Enterprise Zones, California  Representative Gary Miller, R-Rancho Cucamonga, introduced a bill that would enable economically challenged areas in the Inland Empire to qualify for "Empowerment Zones," similar to the state's Enterprise Zones, which are being phased out by the end of the year. The proposed program would be federally funded, rather than California-funded.  CLICK HERE to read more about the proposed Empowerment Zones in the Inland Empire. For more information, contact Matt Petteruto, Vice President, Economic Development.

GROUNDBREAKING SET FOR IRVINE'S ALEGRE APARTMENTS

Adequate and affordable workforce housing remains a crucial issue as more than 50,000 housing units are needed in Orange County in order to keep pace with the growing demand. The Western Region announced the closing of construction financing and direct equity investment in the Alegre Apartments in Irvine with  Bank of America Merill Lynch.
