The Leading Voice of Business in Orange County

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

THE DOCTOR IS IN THE HOUSE! YOUR MAY 2012 ECONOMIC UPDATE.

From the desk of Dr. Wallace Walrod, OCBC's Chief Economic Advisor:

CA's Employment Development Department (EDD) data show signs of steady continuing economic recovery for Orange County. The unemployment rate dropped to 7.4% in April, down from a revised 8.2% in March and the lowest it has been since January 2009. During April, OC added 3,300 jobs, the third month in a row the county has seen employment gains. If employment continues to grow at this rate, the county could add close to 40,000 jobs this year, a strong showing in a tough economy. Orange County industries showing growth include healthcare, business and professional services, trade and tourism. Tourism in particular saw growth, in part due to the Disneyland Resort's ongoing investment in its expansion of California Adventure. The tourism industry can also expect generous growth in early summer when California Adventure's Cars Land opens in June. Disneyland Resort recently became the county's largest employer, employing 23,000 people. The expansion added 2,300 jobs, and 1,700 direct construction jobs a year since 2008. In addition to grassroots efforts, OCBC advocated for this legislation during its recent DC trip. The Senate followed the House in recently approving the reauthorization bill, preventing Ex-Im Bank's expiration on May 31. CLICK HERE to read more.
  • On Friday Governor Jerry Brown appointed David A. Thompson as associate justice of the Fourth District Court of Appeal, Division Three, an appointment for which OCBC strongly advocated, along with the local legal community. CLICK HERE to read more. OCBC STORMS THE CAPITOL TO ADVOCATE FOR BUSINESS

As part of OCBC's annual One Voice, Two Capitols advocacy program, OCBC was joined by the Association of California Cities - OC for its recent advocacy trip to Sacramento, sponsored by Automobile Club of Southern California, Disneyland Resort, The Irvine Company and Michael Brandman Associates. A delegation of 40 business leaders and City Council members charged the capitol to deliver a strong message from Orange County that economic success stems from government and business working together, a particularly poignant message in light of the latest economic news accompanying the Governor's Budget Revise. OCBC and ACC-OC met with Controller John Chiang, CARB Chair Mary Nichols, Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, Speaker pro Tem Fiona Ma, the Senate and Assembly Republican leaders and Whips, other Senate and Assembly committee chairs and OC's own legislative delegation to advocate for Orange County's priority issues including transportation, water, education and regulatory reform, and raising the profile of the County. What is needed now more than ever is a bipartisan approach to creating a more business-friendly climate, where business has the confidence to grow and hire and where cities have the ability to continue to provide services to their residents.
