The Wayfarer: A House of Social Provisions is an absolute gem nestled inside a seedy shopping center in Costa Mesa. It’s a quintessential hipster bar nailing the cliché so well that even if you go purely for the people watching, it’s worth it. The place is large with enough going on that three different people could go and never see each other depending on the kind of night they wanted to have. To the right of the door are the dive-bar standbys of a pool table and outdoor smoking patio where flannels and beanies partake in that adult arcade thing. The center back wall is consumed with an amply long bar facing plenty of seating at tables and chairs for those interested in a pint-after-pint kind of night. To the left is an awesome stage where I usually spend my time to watch an array of almost every type of local live music – from reggae, to folk and soul, and even some EDM. The menu isn’t bad either with a healthy range of cocktails, daily specials on bar eats like tacos and sliders, and a week-day happy hour from 5-7 p.m. I’ve personally never tried the bottomless pasta on Sundays – I think that’s just meant for the millennial with a faster metabolism who doesn’t need to work so hard to fit into her skinny jeans.
